Grand Island, Neb.—The City of Grand Island and Downtown Railside invite the community to celebrate the lights, sounds, and fun activities of the Christmas holiday on Friday, Dec. 1, with a family-oriented Christmas event in downtown Grand Island.
The event is free to attend and will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the 25th annual Community Tree Lighting event led by Mayor Jeremy Jensen and Mr. & Mrs. Claus at Grand Island City Hall, 100 E. First St. Following the tree lighting from 6 to 8 p.m. will be downtown activities in the Railside Plaza and on Third Street.
The evening will include performances from Heartland Dance Company, Northwest Gold Dust, The Dance Company, Third City Taekwondo on the square and a Christmas Story at New Life Community Church. Other activities will include horse drawn carriage rides, strolling carolers, and vendors such as Jim Schneider’s Concessions, Cosmopolitans American Fare, and Helgoth’s Kettle Korn and Barrel Train. In addition, Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be greeting eventgoers at Kinkaider and New Life Community church will be filled with games for kids of all ages, cookie decorating, and will be hosting a chili feed.
A fundraising event for Mercy Meals and the Salvation Army Backpack program is being hosted by the Wednesday Group in the Harmony Building off Railside Plaza where a variety of Christmas crafts and refreshments will be offered.
